In August 2023, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Zheng Jianhua, former chairman of Shanghai Electric Group Corporation, to death with a two-year reprieve for crimes of accepting bribes, embezzlement, and misappropriation of public funds. He was also deprived of political rights for life and ordered to forfeit all personal assets. The court found that during his tenure in leadership roles at Shanghai Electric and its subsidiaries, Zheng abused his position to seek benefits for others in exchange for massive illicit payments, embezzled public funds, and unauthorizedly diverted state-owned capital for other uses, causing significant losses to state assets.
